Last week the Norwegian music rights agency TONO celebrated its 75th anniversary by offering almost 50.000 songs for download -- for free.
After information on this offer had been published on the sites of the large Norwegian newspapers (Aftenposten, VG, Dagbladet) more than 200.000 songs were downloaded from musikkonline.no in about two hours. On Monday afternoon, the servers were no longer able to handle the reqeusts until Tuesday morning.
Unfortunately, the songs were only available for Window Media Player, and the license did not allow burning the songs on a CD. Until the offer ended on last Friday, approx. 2.500.000 songs were downloaded and 47.000 new users registered on musikkonline.
On Tuesday I posted an article to heise.de, and it finally appeared on their news site ;)
